Am ajuns \u00een Varni\u0163a vinerea trecut\u0103, seara, dup\u0103 o diminea\u0163\u0103 petrecut\u0103 la Corpul P\u0103cii pentru a jura \u015fi a m\u0103 \u00eent\u00e2lni cu familia gazd\u0103. Dup\u0103 c\u0103l\u0103toria \u00eempreun\u0103 cu colegul meu voluntar la Corpul P\u0103cii Jeremy, eu, \u00een primul r\u00e2nd am fost dus la noua mea cas\u0103. Eram obosit dar \u015fi emo\u0163ionat c\u0103 am ajuns \u00een satul care \u00eemi va fi cas\u0103 pentru urm\u0103torii 2 ani. Noua mea mam\u0103 gazd\u0103 a f\u0103cut totul pentur ca eu s\u0103 m\u0103 simt ca acas\u0103: mi-a ar\u0103tat camera mea nou\u0103 \u015fi s-a oferit s\u0103-mi preg\u0103teasc\u0103 cina dup\u0103 ce m-am acomodat. Eu reede m-am despachetat \u015fi am mers s\u0103-mi aranjez camera ca s\u0103 m\u0103 simt mai comod. Am luat cina \u015fi am mers la culcare cu un v\u00e2rtej de idei pentru viitor \u00een capul meu. \u00cen weekend am petrecut timpul pentru a cunoa\u015fte mama mea gazd\u0103, casa \u015fi pentru a \u00eenv\u0103\u0163a a tr\u0103i \u00eempreun\u0103. Cur\u00e2nd am realizat c\u0103 nu am destule competen\u0163e pentru a comunica efectiv \u00een limba rom\u00e2n\u0103. \u015etiam c\u0103 acest lucru va trece imediat dup\u0103 ce m\u0103 integrez \u00een noua mea comunitate din Varni\u0163a. Luni a fost prima mea zi de lucru cu partenerul meu, am vizitat asocia\u0163ia de tineret cu sediul \u00een prim\u0103rie. Se observa c\u0103 partenera avea emo\u0163ii, \u00eens\u0103 noi ambii ne-am concentrat ca s\u0103 \u00eentocmim un plan pentru urm\u0103toarele s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2ni. Mar\u0163i, am avut ocazia pentru prima dat\u0103 s\u0103 \u00eent\u00e2lnesc mul\u0163i dintre tinerii voluntari care sunt membrii asocia\u0163iei. Am avut \u015fansa de a-mi practica Rom\u00e2na, ocazional am folosit Engleza pentru a clarifica detaliile importante. Am petrecut dou\u0103 ore pentru a ne cunoa\u015fte reciproc, pentru a cunoa\u015fte asocia\u0163ia \u015fi modul \u00een care ei v\u0103d succesele \u015fi conflictele lor. Dup\u0103 trei ore \u015fi jum\u0103tate, la asfin\u0163it de soare, eu \u015fi cu Jeremy \u00eencet mergeam \u00eenapoi, epuiza\u0163i \u015fi fl\u0103m\u00e2nzi \u00eens\u0103 foarte mul\u0163umi\u0163i de tur \u015fi de \u015fansa de a interac\u0163iona cu tinerii \u00eentr-un cadru neoficial.<\/p>\n

Partenerul meu de lucru a plecat \u00een vacan\u0163\u0103, deci am petrecut restul s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2nii \u00eent\u00e2lnindu-m\u0103 cu tinerii membri \u00eenv\u0103\u0163\u00e2nd mai mult despre speran\u0163ele \u015fi frust\u0103rile lor \u00een lucrul cu asocia\u0163ia. Am \u00eencercat s\u0103 le explic de ce am venit \u00een Varni\u0163a, ce sper s\u0103 realizez \u015fi cum a\u015f putea s\u0103 \u00eei ajut s\u0103 creeze o asocia\u0163ie puternic\u0103. Joi, la serviciu, a fost prima mas\u0103 \u00een Varni\u0163a, cu ocazia zilei de na\u015ftere a unei colege de birou. A fost o oportunitate pentru mine de a interac\u0163iona cu oamenii din prim\u0103rie \u00eentr-un mod mai neoficial, relaxant \u015fi distractiv. Eu, desigur, am fost \u00eentrebat \u00een limba rom\u00e2n\u0103 multe lucruri despre via\u0163a mea, cu greu \u00eemi reu\u015fea s\u0103 dau r\u0103spunsuri coerente la \u00eentreb\u0103ri. \u00cen acest moment am \u00eenceput s\u0103 apreciez c\u00e2t este de important s\u0103 petreci timpul cu colegii, prietenii, familia, care reprezint\u0103 un atribul indispensabil a culturii moldovene\u015fti. \u00cen timpul s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2nii am avut prilejul s\u0103 fac o plimbare \u00een jurul satului interac\u0163ion\u00e2nd cu oamenii \u00een magazin, \u00een strad\u0103 \u015fi pe malul Nistrului.<\/p>\n

Am \u00eencheiat prima mea s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2n\u0103 mult mai fierbinte dec\u00e2t am \u00eenceput-o, \u00eenc\u0103 obosit, dar foarte entuziasmat \u015fi curios de ce m\u0103 a\u015fteapt\u0103 \u00een Moldova, \u00een satul care m-a adoptat pentru urm\u0103torii doi ani: Varni\u0163a. I arrived in Varnita late Friday afternoon after a morning spent at Peace Corps for swearing-in and our host-family conference. After traveling with my fellow Peace Corps volunteer Jeremy, I was taken to my new home first. I was tired and hot yet excited to have arrived in the village that would be home for the next two years. My new mama gazda tried to make me feel at home by showing me my new room and offering to make dinner when I had a chance to settle in. I quickly unpacked and began to make my room more comfortable. I ate dinner and got ready for bed with visions of the future swirling in my head. Over the weekend I spent time getting to know my mama gazda, the house and learning how we would live together. I soon realized that my Romanian language skills were not at a level that I could communicate as effectively as I needed. I knew this would soon pass as I integrated into my new community of Varnita. I also had an opportunity to meet my host brother and sister\u2019s respective families and learn more about what my next two years would be like.<\/p>\n

Monday was my first day of work with my partner assisting a youth association housed in the primeria. My partner\u2019s excitement for my presence in the office was obvious and we both drew from this to begin preparing a plan for the next several weeks. Tuesday was my first opportunity to meet many of the youth volunteers who make up the membership of the association. I had a chance to practice my Romanian and occasionally use English to clarify important points. We spent two hours getting to know each other, the association and how they viewed their successes and struggles. It was a great opportunity to observe the members in action and sense their passion and challenges in working with the association. We ended the day working on some strategic planning for the association and I asked the members to study what we had completed. We agreed to meet again on Thursday, and the members promised me a tour later. I invited Jeremy to tag along and we met the members at 5:00pm to begin our walking tour of Varnita. Three and a half hours later Jeremy and I walked slowly back at dusk exhausted and hungry yet very appreciative of the tour and the chance to interact with the youth in a more casual setting.<\/p>\n

My work partner was going on vacation so spent the remainder of the week meeting with the youth members learning more about their hopes and frustrations working with the association, and trying to explain why I was in Varnita, what I hoped to accomplish and how I could help them create a stronger association. Thursday was also my first masa in Varnita at work for one of my colleagues in the office. It was an opportunity for me to interact with people in the primeria in a more casual, relaxed and fun setting. I was of course asked in Romanian many things about my life and tried very hard to field questions with coherent answers. It was a time to appreciate how important time spent with others-colleagues, friends, family is a very important part of the Moldovan culture. During the week I also had an opportunity walk around the village interacting with people in the magazines and along the road and the Nistru river. I ended my first week much as I had started it-hot, tired yet excited for the journey ahead over the next two years in my new adopted Moldovan village called Varnita.
